Quick Answer

Vape kits outperform disposables in almost every way.

  • They are more cost-effective.
  • They offer a wider variety of flavours.
  • They have a smaller environmental footprint.
  • They provide better long-term value.

However, they last far longer and cost significantly less per puff.

What’s the Difference Between a Disposable Vape and a Vape Kit?

Disposable vapes are single-use devices. They have a sealed, non-rechargeable battery and a fixed nicotine strength. You use them until the liquid or battery runs out, then discard the whole device. These need no maintenance but offer zero flexibility. Since 1 June 2025, disposable vapes are no longer legally available in the UK.

Vape kits are rechargeable devices with a reusable battery and either:

  • Prefilled pods that are swapped when empty, or
  • Refillable pods that you fill manually.

The device itself can last months or even years, replacing only pods or coils. Big puff kits, capable of delivering between 2,400 and 50,000 puffs, quickly became the leading disposable replacement in the UK. Popular models include the IVG 2400, Lost Mary 4-in-1, and Hayati Pro Ultra.

Side-by-Side Comparison

Feature Disposable Vape Vape Kit / Big Puff Kit
Puff Count 600–5,000 2,400–50,000+
Battery Non-rechargeable USB-C rechargeable
Flavour Single fixed flavour Multi-pod or refillable options
Nicotine Options Fixed 0–20mg fully adjustable
Maintenance None Pod swap or occasional coil replacement
Cost per Puff ~£0.010 £0.001–£0.003
Environmental Impact High waste Low waste (reusable battery)
Legal Status Banned (2025) Fully legal (TPD compliant)

The UK Disposable Vape Ban

From 1 June 2025, all single-use disposable vapes were banned in the UK. The legislation aimed to:

  • Reduce environmental waste
  • Limit youth vaping

Millions of devices, each containing a lithium battery and plastic casing, were being discarded weekly. These posed a growing landfill problem and fire hazard.

The ban targets non-rechargeable, single-use devices. Vapes with a rechargeable battery and replaceable or refillable pods remain legal. This means the convenience users enjoyed is still available in new, compliant formats.

Legal alternatives must follow UK TPD regulations:

  • Maximum nicotine: 20mg/ml
  • Maximum pod size: 2ml
  • Maximum nicotine-containing bottle: 10ml
  • MHRA-registered products from verified UK retailers

Big Puff Vape Kits: The Closest Legal Alternative

Big puff kits replicate the simplicity of disposables while offering:

  • Longer device life
  • Rechargeable battery
  • Multiple pod or refillable systems

Examples:

  • IVG 2400 – four-pod system with simple pod swaps
  • Lost Mary 4-in-1 – multi-pod device with auto-draw
  • Hayati Pro Ultra – heavy-use device with high puff counts and refillable pods

Refillable pod kits offer the lowest cost per puff. Big puff kits provide a seamless transition for users accustomed to disposables.

Long-Term Costs: Disposable vs Vape Kit

Device Type Weekly Cost Monthly Cost Yearly Cost
Disposable Vape £42 £180 £2,190
Big Puff Vape Kit £15–£25 £60–£100 £180–£300
Refillable Pod Kit £20–£35 £80–£140 £240–£420

Switching from disposables to a big puff kit can save £1,800–£2,000 annually. The upcoming UK vape tax in October 2026 will slightly increase e-liquid costs, but it doesn’t erase these savings.

Flavour and Nicotine Options

Disposables lock users into a single flavour and nicotine strength. Big puff and refillable pod kits offer:

  • Multiple flavours in one device (multi-pod kits)
  • Full access to the UK e-liquid market with hundreds of flavours
  • Nicotine control from 0mg to 20mg

This flexibility was a major factor in their popularity following the disposable ban.

Environmental Impact

Disposables created significant waste. Millions of lithium batteries and plastic casings are discarded weekly.

Refillable and big puff kits are far more sustainable:

  • Battery units are reused for months or years
  • Only small pods or coils need replacement
  • Heavy users generate much less waste compared to daily disposable use

Which Device Is Right for You?

  • Ex-smokers starting vaping: Refillable pod kits with 20mg nic salts, e.g.,
  • Vaporesso XROS 4
  • Budget-conscious users: Refillable pods offer the lowest cost per puff
  • Former disposable users seeking simplicity: Big puff multi-pod kits replicate the disposable experience

Pros and Cons

Disposable Vapes

Pros:

  • Simple
  • Portable
  • No maintenance

Cons:

  • Expensive
  • Fixed flavour/nicotine
  • High waste

Big Puff / Prefilled Kits

Pros:

  • Rechargeable
  • Many flavours
  • Legal
  • Lower cost per puff
  • Less waste

Cons:

  • Requires pod swap
  • Daily charging for heavy users

Refillable Pod Kits

Pros:

  • Lowest cost per puff
  • Full flavour control
  • Minimal waste
  • TPD compliant

Cons:

  • Small learning curve
  • Frequent refills for heavy users due to 2ml pod limits

Ecig News Verdict

The disposable vape ban legally ended the debate, but vape kits were already the better choice.

In 2026:

  • Big puff kits offer simplicity like disposables
  • Refillable pods deliver the best long-term value, flavour flexibility, and nicotine control
  • Both options are fully TPD-compliant and available from verified UK retailers

Big puff kits are ideal for convenience; refillable pod kits are unbeatable for value and control. Both provide a superior experience to the single-use devices they replaced.

At Ecig News, we continue to monitor changes across the UK vaping landscape and provide straightforward guidance to help vapers make informed decisions.
